LARIMAR
Hidden for centuries
beneath the mountains
of the Dominican Republic,
Larimar is found in only one place
in the world:
the province of Barahona,
on the Caribbean island
of Hispaniola.
Although traces of the stone
were reported earlier,
Larimar was rediscovered
in the 1970s by Miguel Méndez
and Norman Rilling.
Its name was created
by combining “Larissa,”
the name of Méndez’s daughter,
with mar, the Spanish word for sea —
a tribute to the extraordinary
Caribbean blues of the stone.
From pale turquoise
to intense sky blue,
often crossed by white patterns
resembling sunlight moving
across tropical waters,
each Larimar has
a naturally unique appearance.
This rare blue variety
of the mineral pectolite
has become intimately connected
with the landscape
of the Caribbean.
Its colors and singular origin
have gradually associated Larimar
with serenity, communication,
freedom and emotional harmony.
