High in the mountains,
where Quartz crystals slowly form
within the earth,
some develop mysterious shades
of smoke, warm brown
and deep translucent grey.

Smoky Quartz owes its distinctive color
to natural irradiation acting
over time on traces of aluminum
within the crystal.
The result is a remarkable spectrum,
from barely perceptible smoky tones
to rich brown and almost black crystals.

The stone has a particularly strong connection
with Scotland, where dark varieties
of Smoky Quartz have long been found
in the Highlands.
Known locally as Cairngorm,
after the Cairngorm Mountains,
the stone became part
of traditional Scottish adornment
